While there are endless items you can buy for your cat, our full list here of recommendations can be found in our Petcademy Product Guide, we recommend prioritizing:
- At least one bowl for dry food and one for water. Stainless steel or ceramic work best.
- A supply of dry cat food. We like Natural Balance and recommend a food that is or higher.
- A collar with an ID tag. Even though the majority of rescue cats are microchipped, they still need an ID tag, in case they escape from your home.
- A soft place to sleep. While we recommend purchasing a cat bed, old towels or blankets will work in the short term.
- A cardboard box. While this probably won't cost you any additional money, your cat will be over the moon to find a cardboard box in their new space.
- Uncovered litter box. Make sure the box is an appropriate size for your cat.
- Litter. Use clumping litter unless otherwise directed by your vet or the group you from.
- Scratching posts or trays. Try different types of scratching posts and trays to see which your cat prefers.
- Cat treats. Giving treats is a good way to help train and build a positive relationship with your cat.
- Cat toys. Make sure the toys are durable and safe (without bits that will be harmful if swallowed).
- Grooming supplies. A well-groomed cat is a happy cat. Purchasing a quality brush is a good place to start.
