When a cat leaves the shelter, they need time to decompress and release the anxiety attached to shelter life. To help your cat "recover" and transition into the comfort of your home:
- Wait at least 72 hours before allowing anyone new into your home.
- Keep your cat separate from your other animals at first (more details in a later lesson).
- Provide your cat with mentally enriching activities such as self-play toys, food puzzles, interactive toys, and a cardboard box (you can even leave the brown paper packaging that often comes with the box)!
- Avoid overstimulation and try to keep everyone in your house as calm as possible when interacting with your cat.
- Create a relaxing environment by playing soft music.
