When shopping for a crate, keep these things in mind:
1. Choose a metal mesh crate so your dog can see what’s going on at home
The sheer quantity of crate types can be overwhelming; there are fabric ones, plastic ones, metal, ones, wood ones, etc. We recommend buying a metal mesh crate. This is because your dog can see out of the sides and still feel like they are part of the home. The openings in a metal mesh crate are also large enough for you to give treats through the bars and reward your dog for engaging in behaviors you like. When your dog needs quiet time, you can always throw a blanket over the crate.
Most open mesh crates also fold up nicely, which means you can take them with you on the go or put them away when necessary.
2. The crate shouldn’t be much bigger than your dog
When selecting a crate, it’s a good idea to pick one that isn’t a much larger than your dog. Your dog should be able to sit, stand, lie down, and turn around, but he shouldn’t be able to do laps. This is especially true if your dog isn’t housebroken, as you don’t want him using one part of the crate to hang out and one part to pee and poop. If you have a crate that isn’t much bigger than your dog, your dog is likely to learn to hold his bladder. Just remember to take your dog outside immediately after taking them out of the crate.
3. Size up as your dog grows up
Some crates come with dividers. These are convenient because you can make the space progressively larger as your dog grows.
4. Be aware of bathroom habits
If your dog has a history of relieving themselves in the crate, avoid putting blankets or bedding inside, as this might encourage your dog to pee.
5. Use treats to help your dog get comfortable with his new crate
Want to encourage interest in the crate? You can always make use of good old FOMO! While your dog is outside of the crate, put a treat or meal inside, then close the door of the crate for a minute. Let your dog notice what’s in the crate, and let the excitement build! When you open the door, your dog will rush in, and will likely remember that inside the crate is an awesome place to be.
