Instead of viewing the car as a scary, moving, thing, we want your pup to think “Oh! Going in the car means I get great things!” To do this:
(1) Build a good association
Work to associate the car with something your dog likes. For instance, every time you go in the car, give her lots of her favorite treats or access to her favorite toy.
(2) Build endurance
Build endurance slowly. Once a day, practice bringing your dog in the car for 1-2 minutes. You don’t need to drive anywhere, just bring her inside, give her treats or a favorite toy, and then get out of the car. This will help her slowly feel more comfortable.
(3) Have patience
Working slowly to help change your dog’s perception of cars will pay off.
